Sixteen

Growing up under the Grimm Order, we had learned a thing or two about strategy. Since none of us had begun at the same starting point, our individual lessons might have differed greatly, but the results were the same. The Order bred people for competition, for survival, and under the perfect conditions, they provided all the tools one needed to navigate any game.

“Cold again?” Elliot teased, drawing a finger down my bare leg and making my goose bumps worse.

Out of all the pawns, only four remained—two white and two black. Others had been slain on both sides, leaving each team with far fewer items of clothing than when we began. The worst part was that we hadn’t been playing that long and already, my team was beginning to lose. Twice now, Odette and Marius had captured one of our rooks and a knight that had overtaken their army. They’d asked for a kiss on the cheek from me and Elliot’s shirt in return.

My pants had disappeared last round, when Marius reluctantly asked for them—I was down to my bra, underwear, and the blanket otherwise.

I pretended to cover myself more while shooing away Elliot’s hand. “It’s your turn.”

He removed his phone from his pocket. “The furnace gets warm quickly down here,” he said against my cheek before setting it aside and casually moving a bishop three spaces sideways.

Unlike when we had been pitted against each other, he seemed disinterested in the fact that our opponents were besting us. Elliot didn’t care that he’d been stripped down to his boxers, acting as though he was no more naked than if he’d been wearing a tailored suit.

“Once again,” Odette announced quietly, plucking the piece he’d just moved off the board and replacing it with her queen, “you’ve fallen into my trap, little prince.”

Although she hadn’t relinquished more than her shorts, the robe that covered the rest of Odette’s body had slid down one shoulder. Her full lips were tinted red in the center from the wine, but her smile remained radiantly white.

“It appears so.” Elliot feigned embarrassment, but I’d suspected he’d been throwing the game on purpose from the beginning. “What do you ask of me, baby?”

I might as well have been playing with an anchor strapped to my foot. My scowl didn’t escape him, but it just made his grin more intense. This was entertaining for my Owner, giving up control outwardly to one while he still had full command over another.

“Give Fawn a kiss,” Odette finally decided.

Marius looked pleased with the idea, moving closer to her so he could watch. “Good choice.”

Elliot’s grin liquefied the disappointment of losing, the anger at the simple fact that someone had outsmarted me. He had pivoted me off his lap at the first loss, but now he dragged me back. My bare neck broke out in heat while my nipples hardened under the thin bra. It pooled between my legs as he parted them, pulling my arms around his neck while I straddled his waist.

I could hear them softly chuckling, but Elliot didn’t find anything funny.
